Rules and conditions


  1. The competition for 2016 is open to all brass instruments

  2. The competition is open to musicians who on the 8th of October 2016 will be no older than 25.

  3. The first round of competition is a video performance for a place in the final which will consist of three to four musicians selected by the jurors.

  4. The video performance must have a minimum length of 8 minutes and be no longer than 15 minutes. The performance needs to showcase the applicant's ability as a performer and musician. It is expected that the performer(s) show a high standard of presentation on the video as the jurors will take this into consideration. A contrasting piece or pieces is recommended for the audition video and the applicant can be accompanied by either piano, brass band, or a backing track.

  5. The audition video can be submitted in either a DVD to be sent with the entry form (by post) or online by including an unlisted YouTube link to the video in the application form (if submitting digitally).

  6. A proposed programme of one or two pieces (total time between 20 and 30 minutes) for the final must be included with the official entry form.

  7. The band parts and scores for the proposed music in the final must be readily available in New Zealand (unless you own the music or have access to it). It is strongly recommended that the competitors source all music required for their proposed final programme before submitting their entry form.

  8. Entries close 5pm Friday 30 September.

  9. The official entry form and entry fee must be received by 5pm Friday 30 September. Late entries will be accepted until 5pm Friday 7 October at an extra cost to the competitor.

  10. The entry fee of 20 dollars (or $30 for late entries) must be paid by direct debit to the New Zealand Brass Foundation (NZBF). On receiving the application and payment NZBF will send the applicant an email notification to confirm.

  11. A biography of no more than 100 words suitable for publishing in the programme needs to be attached to your entry form.

  12. A copy of your audition music needs to be attached for the jurors.

  13. The three or four finalists selected to compete in the final to be held in Wellington on Saturday 19th of November will be contacted by the organisers prior to the official announcement to discuss further details. The finalists will be accompanied by the 2016 Champion band of New Zealand Wellington Brass.

  14. All prize money is to go towards music related costs. The winner of the final will receive a $1000, and the runner-up will receive $500. Two Brass Fellowships will be also be awarded (For Under 19s only).  Flights for finalists to the final are not included.

  15. Previous first prize winners of the competition can not enter.







How to submit video (on YouTube)


  1. Go to http://www.youtube.com/ and sign in using your google account, if you don’t have a Google or YouTube account you will need to sign up.


Sign up using computer

  • Click Sign in in the upper right corner of YouTube on your computer.

  • Click Create Account and enter some basic information to create your new Google Account. You'll be asked to create a Google username when signing up. This is your new Gmail email address only - it will not be your public name on YouTube.

  • Once you've finished setting up your Google Account, click Back to YouTube.

On YouTube android app

  • Touch the Menu and go to Sign in. Touch Add account and then go to New to create your Google Account.


On YouTube iOS app

  • It isn't currently possible to create a Google Account on the YouTube iOS app. Please visit m.youtube.com on your mobile browser to create a Google Account.


On YouTube mobile web app

  • Touch the Guide and go to Sign in. Select Create an account.After you sign up for YouTube, you can take advantage of many YouTube features, including Like, Subscribe, Favourites, Watch Later and Watch History. YouTube will also be able to personalise video recommendations based on the videos you’ve liked and your subscriptions.


  1. Click the Upload button at the top of the page.

  2. Select the video audition you'd like to upload from your computer.

  3. Before you start uploading the video you can chose the video privacy settings. Make sure you select unlisted. As the video is uploading, you can add information (e.g. title, description, tags), change your privacy settings.

  4. Make any changes you want to the video settings and information, then click Publish to finish uploading it on YouTube. You can always publish your video at a later time in your Video Manager. If you set the video privacy setting to Private or Unlisted, just click Done to finish the upload If you haven’t clicked Publish, your video won’t be viewable by other people.

  5. Once the upload is completed select the video URL and copy the link and paste it into the NZBF Young Brass Musician of the Year entry form.
